Fans of interrogation scenes in NYPD Blue and the late, lamented Homicide, not to mention The Usual Suspects, will thrill to this Australian psychological mind-bender that earned awards in its native country for Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for Hugo Weaving as Eddie Fleming, who is rousted without warning from his apartment and brought in for questioning in connection with a stolen car whose owner is missing. Tony Martin costars as John Steele, Fleming's interrogator, who makes Andy Sipowicz look like Barney Miller. Steele, locked in a power struggle with his own superior, revels in his reputation as a hard case "brought in here to get results." But as his superior notes, he's "had more complaints than Ned Kelly." Is Fleming a serial killer? Just who is under investigation here? The ending packs a wallop with an enigmatic smile that is at once triumphant and chilling. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
