A bookish prison guard (Giancarlo Esposito), convinced that one of his charges (Isaach de Bankole) is innocent, helps bail him out and invites him to stay at his home while he prepares for trial. What begins as an intriguing story about the consequences of a selfless gesture gradually dissipates into a not-very-insightful examination of male sexual jealousy, complete with a long shouting match between the guard and his wife consisting almost entirely of variations on "Did you f--- him?" Nice to finally see Giancarlo Esposito (School Daze, Do the Right Thing) in a leading role, though; let's hope he finds something stronger than this well-meaning but muddled morality play for the next one. Not recommended. (M. D'Angelo)[DVD Review--Jan. 26, 2004--Kino, 92 min., not rated, $29.95--Making its debut on DVD, 1995's The Keeper sports a solid transfer, and features a stills gallery and trailer. Bottom line: slim on extras and muddled on narrative, this is still not a keeper.]
