Oddly, the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization authorized Richard Rich's animated adaptation of this classic musical (didn't they see his The Swan Princess III?) Miranda Richardson is the voice of Anna, the widowed schoolteacher who experiences profound culture shock when she accepts a position in the palace of the conflicted King of Siam, who is bound by ancient traditions. Liberties taken with the story include a Kralahome who treacherously plots against the King, not to mention a climactic balloon rescue. Never mind Jar Jar Binks: more offensive is the stereotypical Charlie Chan dialect of comic henchman Master Little (Darrell Hammond). The songs, at least, remain something wonderful, although the King's signature song, "A Puzzlement," is ruined by a bizarre scene in which he is unwittingly menaced by statues brought to life by the Kralahome. It is sad to think that for millions of children, this will be how they get to know this beloved classic. Not recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
