Based on a novella by Leo Tolstoy (banned during his lifetime)—which was inspired by the author's reaction to Beethoven's fiery, eponymous composition—this sexual drama from filmmaker Bernard Rose stars Danny Huston as a man obsessed with the idea that his pianist wife (Elisabeth Röhm) is having an affair with a virtuoso violinist (Matthew Yang King). Edgar (Huston), wealthy head of a charitable foundation, and Abby (Röhm), a Juilliard-trained concert musician, begin a romance and within a few years, the pair are married parents, and Abby has abandoned her career. After handsome Aidan (King)—tapped to perform at a benefit hosted by Edgar—suggests that Abby perform “Kreutzer” with him, she regains her life as an artist. But Edgar believes that “Kreutzer” has ignited passion between the musicians, leading him down a psychological rabbit hole of paranoia and rage. Rose uses this broad theme as an umbrella for an exploration of a crumbling marriage that demands a lot from the two lead actors (who are both very good). A nice bonus: Huston shares a couple of scenes with his sister, Anjelica Huston. Recommended. C, P. (T. Keogh)
