In a return to form, premier German director Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum) evokes the Cold War era of Germany in the '70s--last visited by the filmmaker with The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum--in this riveting character study of a terrorist trying to go straight. Based on the activities of the Baader-Meinhof gang of left-wing radicals, the film focuses on Rita (superbly played by Bibiana Beglau), an idealistic if naive young woman who assumes a new identity in East Germany after going on the run from the West. Clinging to her Communist beliefs while toiling away as a factory worker, she makes new friends (and loves) only to switch identities again when her ruse is threatened. Recommended. (T. Rich)
