The zeitgeist of Andy Hardy ("Hey kids! Lets put a show together!") might have found its modern incarnation in this effusive American Film Institute short film about a group of dim but dedicated rural postal workers. Colleen Camp (a casting coup) leads a troupe of feisty unknown young actors gunning for the ultimate deadpan as the story meanders somewhere between true romance melodrama and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. It begins when Federal Inspector Martin Stamp is sent to investigate the unconscionable crime of mail tampering among these anything-but-disgruntled postal workers, and ends with our forlorn Fed pining over the woman he loved--but arrested anyway--postmistress Delilah Pooch (Camp). Savvy editing and strong directing distinguish this modest (read "shoestring") production, which glides rather than bumps along, and reveals, in its better moments, glimpses of genuine nascent talent. Unfortunately, its price knocks this video out of the budget ballpark for all but the most ardent short film collecting libraries. Optional. Aud: H, C, P. (W. Pierce)
