Shane Black, barbwire-tongued scripter for Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, has penned another way-over-the-top thriller, this time pairing amnesia victim Geena Davis, a mild-mannered teacher who was a spy in her former life, and hilariously seedy detective Samuel L. Jackson, who just wants to help "Samantha" find her roots. Before you can say "shaken, not stirred," Samantha is being chased by old enemies (who thought she was dead) and rediscovering earlier career skills: such as the ability to kick tush with a vengeance that makes poor Samuel L. wish that he hadn't given up his day job. While not always entirely credible, The Long Kiss Goodnight is ambitiously plotted, entertainingly acted, and more than generous in its effects-laden action sequences. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
