In this warped ‘90s fairytale, Barbra Streisand plays a modern-day Cinderella who marries a handsome mathematician (Jeff Bridges), even though he's not physically attracted to her. Over time, however, her winning personality fills him with desire. Unaware of his change of heart, she decides to transform into a beautiful princess. Though the film attempts to destroy stereotypical views of ugliness, it cruelly reiterates the belief that those who possess physical beauty are snobby, shallow people. Streisand, for example, changes from a smart, sensitive woman into an overly self-conscious, carrot-crunching heartbreaker--and she still gets the prince. For all it's good intentions, The Mirror Has Two Faces is guilty of perpetuating the myths of beauty that it tries so hard to demolish. Not recommended. (L. Russo)
