Terrence Davies' elegiac and emotionally-wrenching film of John Kennedy Toole's novel unfolds in flashback as a young man recalls his adolescence in a small bible belt town, his abusive father (Denis Leary), fragile mother (Diana Scarwid) and glamorous Aunt Mae (Gena Rowlands), a singer whose glory days have since passed and who has come to live at the family's impoverished farmhouse. Davies' deliberate pacing and exquisitely-composed visuals may try more impatient viewers, but Rowlands is as much a force of nature as any twister. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
