“Perfect” hardly describes this road movie about a rock band traveling from the East Coast to California in 1991. The story, told in flashback by dissipated erstwhile rocker Spyder (Kevin Zegers), details the meteoric rise and fall of Lost Soulz, who enjoyed a gigantic debut album but stumbled badly with their sophomore follow-up. Under pressure from the band's label, Spyder invites childhood buddy Eric (Jason Ritter) to join the group—for a specific reason; the songs in the first recording were actually Eric's, and Spyder wants him to write more. Eric agrees but insists that the two of them, along with band manager Rose (Taryn Manning), travel to California in an old RV driven by Augie (Peter Fonda), an old pal of Eric's dad. Along the way Spyder bickers with everybody, Eric and Rose hook up, Augie discourses on the meaning of rock, and the foursome stops at roadside clubs for impromptu gigs before ultimately winding up in Hollywood. Writer-director Scott Rosenbaum presents the story as a mini-version of Citizen Kane, with a reporter prodding Spyder about a legendary third Lost Soulz album, a lame device one could forgive if the movie weren't so lazily constructed and cliché-ridden, sporting risible dialogue that is poorly delivered. Not recommended. [Note: DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette (16 min.), music performance outtakes (6 min.), deleted scenes (4 min.), the “Turn Me On” music video by The Lost Soulz, and promo spots. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a disappointing film.] (F. Swietek)
