"I have all the lines," complains itinerant actor Kevin Costner to his companion, a mule. As the director of this immodest epic, he also gives himself all the close-ups, too. Based on the book by David Brin, this cautionary saga is set in 2013 in a post-apocalyptic United States that is comprised of scattered settlements terrorized by an army known as the Holnists. Costner discovers a postal uniform and a bag of undelivered mail and assumes his new heroic identity, rallying the locals on behalf of the Restored United States of America. "You give out hope like it was candy in your pocket," one woman tells him. The critics went postal over this stupefying golden turkey (in the jaw-dropping conclusion, the postman is deified with a statue) and audiences stayed home. Not recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
