Set in coastal South Africa, The Quarry features the characteristically pensive John Lynch (In the Name of the Father) as an escaped prisoner who assumes the identity (and new assignment) of a Baptist priest after killing him in a fit of rage. When two petty thieves are put on trial for the murder, the now comfortably settled-in fugitive must choose whether to own up to his crime or continue his ruse. Interesting questions about justice and racial prejudice are posed here, though not quite satisfactorily explored. Nevertheless, this is a fairly intriguing study with Lynch compellingly capturing his character's self-torment. A strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
