Romantic frustration is the common thread that ties together a piquant assembly of interconnected but quite divergent lives in this deft, distinctive multi-character dramedy from France. Jean-Pierre Bacri plays an irritable middle-aged businessman in a static marriage who falls for his English tutor (who can't stand him). Meanwhile Bacri's unassuming, emotionally heedless chauffeur and his lothario of a bodyguard square off for the affections of a bartender (co-writer and director Agnès Jaoui) at a pub where these and other stories converge. Nominated for nine Cesar Awards and 2000's Best Foreign Film Oscar, The Taste of Others is an eloquent, unadorned film about bona fide human susceptibility, fidelity, egotism, self-worth, doubt and disillusionment.
