In this gritty mystery of faith and temptation, Ed Harris gives an astounding, ardent performance as a disillusioned Catholic priest who debunks miracle claims for the church. Directed by Agnieszka Holland (Washington Square, Europa, Europa), the film follows Harris' convoluted path of doubt and rediscovery as he investigates the possible canonization of an American nun whose sainthood is opposed by a powerful and pompous Cardinal (Armin Mueller-Stahl). To complicate matters, while investigating the miracles, Harris finds temptation in the now-adult and agnostic daughter (Anne Heche), whom the nun virtually abandoned when she gave her life to God. A complex, compelling and intimate film. Recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
