Paranoia strikes deep...especially if you happen to live just outside Manhattan during a major power outage. Matt (Kyle MacLachan) and Annie (Elisabeth Shue) are a young suburban couple with a boring sex life, an ailing baby, and an unexpected houseguest (Dermot Mulroney) when the lights go out. Writer/director David Koepp wonders how thin civilization's veneer really is at the close of the 20th century, as Matt and Annie venture onto the mean streets of powerless New York. The strong premise, detailed characterization, and solid suspense deliver an overall effective thriller. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
