Simon, a serial killer who's been confined for several years to a psychiatric facility whose Human Resources Department definitely needs an overhaul, requests an independent evaluation by Dr. Karen Shumaker (or "Schumacher," depending on which character is speaking). Dr. Karen's been successful in getting another person free from charges, and that's a good enough recommendation for Simon. Dr. Shumaker apparently received her degree from a mail-order college, because when she enters the facility, she fails to notice that its name has been marred to read "Louse Institute." Then, she's only mildly disturbed that one security guard has "Intensity" tattooed on his bare belly (the only time intensity does occur in the film). Interviewing Simon for the first time, she's not at all disturbed that he's guarded by another security guard who has a target silhouette on his T-shirt...and, oh heck, here's all you need to know about this New Zealand splatterfest: Blood. Gore. Blood. Gore. The Ugly is short for Ugly Duckling. And, oh yes, it's all Mum's fault. Not recommended. (S. Fisher)
