A charming Iranian film about a young girl who wants a chubby (not a plain old skinny) goldfish for the imminent New Year's celebration, The White Balloon charts--in real time--the girl's misadventures in trying to claim her fish in time for the festivities. A little slow-paced, but the expressions on little Aida Mohammad-khani's face as she tackles one setback after another is well worth the time spent. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
