Two years after David Lewis's (Peter Gallagher) wife Gillian died in a boating accident, he not only can't let her go, he walks with her ghost (Michele Pfeiffer) on the beach in scenes that are as corny (but not as effective) as an AT&T commercial. When David's well-meaning friends (Kathy Baker and Bruce Altman) sail over to Nantucket Island for a Labor Day weekend bringing with them new love-interest bait (Wendy Crewson), David and his daughter (Clair Danes) are forced to come to terms with Gillian's death and each other. Unfortunately, Gallagher (and Pfeiffer, for that matter) seem like fish out of water, unable to lift the film beyond sentimental mawkishness to the level of real human drama, though young Danes outshines her elders. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Pitman)
