This $170 million, state-of-the-art extravaganza is a highly anticipated sequel to the first TRON, a 1982 box-office disappointment that went on to become a cult classic on video thanks to gaming geeks who were drawn to the sci-fi storyline about a hacker who is literally pulled inside a computer and forced to play space-age gladiator games. In the new film, rebellious 27-year-old Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) is obsessed by the mysterious disappearance of his father, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original), legendary software developer and visionary founder of Encom. When Sam investigates a strange beeper signal sent from Kevin's now-defunct video arcade, he's sucked into the exotic, digital grid in which his dad has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of an anthropomorphized warrior program named Quorra (Olivia Wilde), Kevin and Sam embark on a perilous quest in this cyber-universe, pursued by Clu, Kevin's avatar/doppelganger, a power-hungry villain determined to enter the human world. Director Joseph Kosinski's TRON: Legacy serves up spectacular CGI sequences, but also suffers from its Freudian-influenced, heavy-handed storytelling. Recommended, overall. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include an “Installing the Cast” featurette (12 min.), a visualization featurette (12 min.), a sneak peek at the TRON: Uprising animated series (2 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are “The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed” interactive featurette, a “Launching the Legacy” story featurette (11 min.), a “Disc Roars” segment featuring director Joseph Kosinski at Comic-Con (3 min.), the music video “Derezzed” by Daft Punk, and bonus DVD and digital copies of the film. Bottom line: a fine extras package for a decent sequel.] (S. Granger)
