That there was no place in theaters for this compelling, erotically-charged drama is video's gain. In an unnamed country, the military cracks down on insurgents, while inside an elegant mansion, a doctor (Michael Gambon of The Singing Detective and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover) hosts an annual dinner for three former classmates. Also present is his beautiful housekeeper Ana (the mesmerizing Sonia Braga), "the woman," he states, "I choose to destroy." Nicolas Roeg's characteristic fragmented storytelling challenges viewers, but this is his most potent film in years. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
