Samuel L. Jackson stars as a crippled and very obsessed comic book collector who tracks down the sole survivor of a commuter train wreck (Bruce Willis) because he's convinced he knows why the man walked away from a demolished railcar without a scratch on him. The film centers around the antagonistic camaraderie that forms between these two men as Willis begins to suspect he may have supernatural abilities and the story delves deeply into both of their dysfunctional lives. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the man behind The Sixth Sense, this is a masterfully crafted film with a precision plot full of extraordinary, allusion-filled storytelling, and fine-tuned scenes that absolutely pop with the kind of symbolic minutiae that inspires mind-bending reexamination after all its secrets are revealed. Recommended. (R. Blackwelder)[Blu-ray Review—Apr. 15, 2008—Touchstone, 102 min., PG-13, $29.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 2000's Unbreakable features an unremarkable 1080p transfer (although some image flatness may be a result of the source material) and a fine uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio track. The bonus features on the disc are identical to the standard DVD release, which include seven deleted scenes (29 min.), a 19-minute “Comic Books and Superheroes” featurette, a 14-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, a multi-angle train station sequence (4 min.), and a two-minute fight sequence from director M. Night Shyamalan's early work. Bottom line: a so-so presentation of an underappreciated film.]
