Brit hottie Rufus Sewell, Brit legend Nigel Hawthorne and Brit serial fiancée Minnie Driver star in this flimsy whimsy centering on the eccentric goings-on among a wealthy English family on their sprawling Northern California farm (?!). Sewell plays family mainstay Ross, a self-absorbed bit-o'-twit who tries to sell off the family's valuable wine cellar in order to finance the rehabilitation of a local Manganese mine, until he is taught the errors of his ways by the family's daft patriarch. Complicating matters are Ross' Thoreau-wannabe brother Paul (Michael E. Rodgers); Ross' fickle girlfriend Kendal (Driver); and the 'just visiting' Laurie (soap star Amelia Heinle), who wisely bides her time in the film's wings, barely testing her already thin filmography. Uncorked (a.k.a. At Sachem Farm, a.k.a. Trade Winds, a.k.a. Higher Love) bowed at the Toronto Film Fest in '98 and then was never heard from again; that is, until now, when for some inexplicable reason Trimark decided to re-open it. While the preceding remarks should serve as sufficient warning, the film may resurface under some other alias in the future, so continued vigilance is recommended, while Uncorked is not. (S. C. Sickles)
