When America entered World War II, Hollywood rolled out its top guns to aid the war effort: but no one rallied the troops like Walt Disney, who enlisted his animators to create morale-boosting cartoons, military training films, and call-to-arms propaganda films. We salute this fascinating two-disc set that vividly demonstrates how films could educate, enlighten, and stir an audience. Compelling entries in this 32-short compilation, such as the nightmarishly funny "Der Füehrer's Face," the grim "Education For Death," the Oscar-nominated “Reason and Emotion,” and the parable "Chicken Little," made the case for war and demonized the enemy. Donald, Pluto, and even Bambi were all enlisted for the war effort in propaganda and entertainment shorts, as well as training films. This double-disc set also contains a true rarity: the 1943 feature Victory Through Air Power, which was never reissued theatrically and has been heretofore unavailable on home video. Host Leonard Maltin's introductions add context to this fascinating treasure trove, which is so much more than a simple blast of Greatest Generation nostalgia. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice.
