A self-satisfied satire of sexual politics based on an unproduced play by a 19-year-old Rainer Werner Fassbinder before he became a renowned German film director, Water Drops On Burning Rocks is the kind of exaggerated, elitist Euro-farce that cinema snobs enjoy just because they know the unwashed masses wouldn't. Directed by Francois Ozon (Under the Sand), this sexual power-play stars Bernard Giraudeau as an aging Lothario in the early 1970s who seduces and abuses an effeminate 19-year-old Franz (Malik Zidi); the boy's buxom, doe-eyed fiancée (Ludivine Sagnier); and a transsexual ex (Anna Thompson)--all at the same time. But the reality is that Giraudeau's sexual magnetism is questionable at best, and any character who could succumb to this shallow, pathetic, lecherous egomaniac isn't worth watching for nearly 90 minutes. Not recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
