Anton Chekhov's Ivanov is loosely adapted in Baltasar Kormákur's dark comedy White Night Wedding, Iceland's entry in the 2008 Academy Award competition for Best Foreign Film. Middle-aged professor Jon (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason) is preparing to wed Thora (Laufey Eliasdottir), a former student half his age. Not the most jovial of prospective grooms, Jon is haunted by the suicide of his first wife Anna (Margret Vilhjalmsdottir), and flashback memories reveal the tensions within that previous marriage. Other parties are also less than enthused: Thora's parents aren't pleased about the upcoming nuptials (a situation not helped by the fact that Jon owes them money), and a stern local clergyman is not convinced a second trip down the aisle is the right journey for Jon to make. This off-kilter contemporary Icelandic film is recommended. (P. Hall)
