Director Jann Turner's rom-com White Wedding is set in a thoroughly modern South Africa, where young, middle-class blacks have the same aspirations, opportunities, and problems as their white counterparts. Likable Elvis (Kenneth Nkosi) is on his way from Johannesburg to Cape Town to wed his lovely fiancée, Ayanda (Zandile Msutwana). But when Elvis stops in Durban to pick up Tumi (Rapulana Seiphemo), his fun-loving and less-than-reliable best man, things quickly veer sideways, resulting in a chaotic race to the finish line that puts the couple's happily-ever-after in jeopardy. The film's various characters and narrative strands, ranging from Ayanda's meddlesome mother (Sylvia Mngxekeza) and smarmy ex-boyfriend (Mbulelo Grootboom) to Elvis and Tumi's on-the-road shenanigans, are unfortunately both familiar and conventional. Only the growing attraction between Tumi and a white English doctor (Jodie Whittaker)—who hitchhikes a ride to get away from a two-timing boyfriend—feels fresh. Ultimately, a handful of winning performances (especially Nkosi's) and breathtaking scenery aren't enough to make this more than a strong optional purchase. (S. Graham)
