Humans have been living in space for 4,000 years. As the crew members of the spaceship Woglinde fight to protect the Zohar—a mysterious monolith with unknown powers—from evil alien creatures called the Gnosis, humanity's last chance for survival may well lie with KOS-MOS, a beautiful female android weapon. Based on the popular video game, Xenosaga mixes both traditional and computer animation techniques (subpar, with mediocre character design) to tell a complex story (which remains largely unexplained in this compilation of the first four episodes) involving not only the aforementioned space battles but also shadowy corporate-like entities. Presented on a dual-language disc, rated TV-14 for violence, Xenosaga features plenty of action, but in these initial episodes at least, it comes at the expense of storytelling. Not a necessary purchase. [Note: Xenosaga, Vols. 2 and 3 are also available.] Aud: P. (K. Fletcher-Spear)
