A starring vehicle for Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sanchez, Yellow is also something of a vanity project as Sanchez co-wrote the original story and helped produce the film. Unfortunately, there's nothing in director Alfredo de Villa's follow-your-dream drama that hasn't been seen a dozen times or more: including the setting—a seedy strip club—where Roselyn's character, Amaryllis Campos, winds up. Amaryllis is a classically trained ballet dancer who has come to New York in pursuit of fame and fortune, only to find that golden opportunities don't grow on trees. So she “works the pole” to make ends meet while waiting for the Big Break. D.B. Sweeney plays the strip-club customer who falls for her, and a cast-against-type Bill Duke shines as the old poetry professor who offers her sage advice. The clichés date back to Flashdance and farther, but Sanchez almost trumps them by virtue of her committed, passionate performance. Almost. Optional. [Note: DVD extras include 18 deleted scenes (29 min.), “Roselyn Sanchez on Yellow” with costar Sanchez (12 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a flawed film.] (E. Hulse)
