The Mean Girls bullying concept is resurrected—in triplicate—as three generations of women in one family unexpectedly confront their high-school nemeses. Beautiful PR pro Marni (Kristen Bell), who has finally overcome the acne-ravaged agony of her teenage years, is summoned home to Northern California for the wedding of her beloved older brother Will (Jimmy Wolk)—only to discover he's marrying her former archenemy Joanna (Odette Yustman), who has charmed the entire clan and pretends not to remember how she once tormented Marni. When Joanna's glamorous Aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver) jets in from Europe for the festivities, it turns out that she once shared a fierce rivalry with Marni's mother (Jamie Lee Curtis). As the elaborate nuptials evolve, staged by exuberant “extraordinator” Georgia (Kristen Chenoweth), Joanna's ex-fiancé Tim (Kyle Bornheimer) surfaces, and there's even an unwelcome surprise for Grandma (Betty White). Vindictive Marni makes it her mission to make sure Will knows the kind of woman he's bringing into the fold. Unfortunately, the hackneyed script is built around crass, misogynistic clichés about women's insecurities, while Andy Fickman's direction is no more than pedestrian, particularly during the truly embarrassing musical numbers. Not recommended. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include a “Following Fickman” on-set featurette with director Andy Fickman (7 min.), deleted scenes (5 min.), a “Funny Or Die” behind-the-scenes spoof (3 min.), an “Ask the Cast” featurette (2 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are additional deleted scenes (15 min.), a “Blooper Dance Party” (5 min.), and a bonus DVD copy of the film. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a disappointing rom-com.] (S. Granger)
