In this half-baked adolescent fairy tale set in medieval times, Prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) is an impudent slacker, especially when compared with his dashing older brother, Prince Fabious (James Franco). But Thadeous is pressed into joining a heroic quest when Fabious' bride Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel) is kidnapped by an evil wizard (Justin Theroux). Oscar-winner Natalie Portman costars as Isabel, an acrobatic female warrior who becomes the object of Thadeous' affection. Unfortunately, that pretty much sums up the lamentable plot of Your Highness. McBride reportedly used to exchange zany ideas with director David Gordon Green when they were undergrads at North Carolina School of the Arts, and the pair apparently thought that the notion of McBride in a chain-mail leotard with a joint in one hand and a sword in the other was hilarious, particularly when paired with the slogan, “Put this in your pipe and smoke it.” Shot primarily on a soundstage in Belfast, Ireland, Your Highness is a profanity-laced misfire full of reefer gags, along with a creepy, hookah-puffing, Yoda-like character who purrs the lame line, “Breathe deeply of these herbs and share a vision with me.” Methinks not. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include audio commentary (by director David Gordon Green and costars Danny McBride, James Franco and Justin Theroux), a “making-of” featurette (30 min.), deleted scenes (8 min.), a gag reel (5 min.), alternate scenes (2 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are extended scenes (15 min.), “Line-O-Rama” alternate takes (4 min.), “Perverted Visions” additional outtakes (2 min.), “A Vision of Leezar” bonus footage (2 min.), a bonus digital copy of the film, and the BD-Live function. Bottom line: a fine extras package for a lame comedy.] (S. Granger)
