In many an 18-year-old's life, spring means prom, graduation, and the panic of preparing for college (often a little on the late side). Getting into College and Start Right offer solid advice to help students make the transition from high school to a successful college career. Guiding students through the application and admissions process by following two high school seniors and their families, Getting into College interviews deans and admissions officers who suggest factors to consider when choosing a college, such as what types of programs are offered, size, location, retention, graduation, and job placement rates. In addition, the program looks at selection criteria used in determining admissions, as well as what to expect when applying for financial aid. Produced by U.S. News & World Report, this bargain-priced title contains a lot of useful information (including pointers to online resources) for college bound students of any age. Aud: H, P.Start Right picks up where Getting into College leaves off, helping students become aware of the adjustments that are involved in moving from high school to college life. Divided into 6 modules that are designed to be part of a student orientation program or college success curriculum, the series' titles are: Lessons in Living on Campus, Succeeding in Academics, Valuing Diversity, Creating a Healthy Lifestyle, Alcohol and Tough Choices, and Money, Money, Money. The programs feature interviews with college students who offer "war stories" and practical advice about getting along with roommates, coping with community bathrooms, finding a quiet place to study and respecting others' boundaries (not to mention how to live on dormitory food). Students will find the series helpful and engaging, the myriad of topics are well covered, and the accompanying worksheets (each tape comes with a study guide) will help participants develop valuable skills. A 60-minute video for facilitators and a 140-page workbook is also included with a full series purchase. High schools and public libraries will certainly want to consider this useful series at the per program price of roughly $66 each, but the price may be prohibitive for all but major academic institutions. More economical choices for all would be First Semester: Preparing for Your College Freshman Year (VL-3/00) for $14.95 and the older title The Secrets of College Success (VL-5/94) priced at $59.95.
