Here's a bit of television history in the making: the second season of Heroes was actually impacted—mid-production—by outraged fans who were unhappy with the direction being taken by this astonishingly successful (both in terms of ratings and critical raves) series built around the concept of ordinary people struggling to cope with the sudden onset of mysterious “superhero” powers (starring Hayden Panettierre, Greg Grunberg, Milo Ventimiglia, and others). Of course, there's little overt acknowledgement of that fact here, but if you read between the lines of the cast and crew audio commentaries and bonus materials, it's clear that more than just the impending writers' strike had an effect on the truncated, 11-episode 2007 sophomore season. Heroes' detour into soap-opera romance and time-travel intrigue infuriated fans and critics alike, who complained vociferously on the Internet, prompting an apology from creator/producer Tim Kring and a storyline shift some two-thirds of the way through the season towards more action. The extensive DVD/Blu-ray extras—from production featurettes and deleted scenes, to online viral marketing material—create a fascinating portrait of a dramatic series in crisis, recovering as best it could in our newly interactive television age. Recommended. (M. Johanson)
