In this latest production from the Guilford stable, ADHD guru Russell A. Barkley promotes a new theoretical model for the study of the disorder. Namely, that “[the] problem with attention, formerly thought to be the central deficit in ADHD, actually results from the limited ability [of sufferers] to motivate themselves from within.” Via wonderful graphics and relevant interviews, Barkley elucidates the problems and omissions of the consensus that clinicians had reached about ADHD by the end of the ‘80s, discusses his latest framework for understanding the condition, and then offers a treatment “package” of diagnosis, education, medication, and accommodation. As with most of Barkley's video product, this tape is based on a book (ADHD and the Nature of Self-Control, in this case) which would cost far less than the $95 asked for the video, but the tape does a succinct, professional job of bottom-lining his sure to be controversial concepts, and would be a fine purchase for academic medical/sociological collections, as well as public libraries.
