Using a scaled-up version of the classic “Attic Windows” pattern, Susie Tilton demonstrates how to make a machine-sewn-and-quilted beginner's lap quilt, requiring all the usual tools, as well as items such as rotary cutters and self-healing mats. Despite the “simple” in the title, Tilton assumes that viewers are familiar with sewing vocabulary and techniques: “selvedge” and other terms are not defined; mitering the binding is suggested but not demonstrated; and instead of making the first two pieces to be sewn together in a sample block piece A to piece B, they are labeled A and D. Little details like this can throw a newbie off, and even some veteran quilters might take umbrage when Tilton says, “With quilting—especially in a block pattern like this—each step brings in a new color and a new element into the design” (to be precise, the sewing of the strips is piecing; quilting involves sewing the three layers together into one) and balk at the suggestion to use “lots of steam” when pressing seams (yikes!—steaming can warp seams and make the blocks come out crooked, and should only be used for clothing). Including patterns and labels in PDF files, A Simple Quilt is an optional purchase.
