"It's time to talk--it's time to walk--it's time to find our way. And if we learn to talk and walk, we'll have a happy day." In this short video, speech/language therapist Darcy Dougherty reminds us that the first 3 years of life set the foundation for a child's future, and that talking directly to Tiffani between the ages of 6 months to 3 years may help her "say more words sooner, develop a larger vocabulary, and score much higher on later IQ tests." To that end, Dougherty sets out for the grocery store, where she demonstrates her 5 "methods of indirect language stimulation": naming, describing, comparing, explaining, and giving directions. That is, as you make your way through the store, give Tiffani the names and attributes of your purchases, while you supply comparisons with other products, explanations of what the product is for, and directions about where the product goes in your cart. Although this concept sounds semi-logical, Dougherty's video is too repetitious, simplistic, and poorly produced to be effective. The staged conversations, out-of-sync audio, endless scenes of children playing, and patronizing tone relegate this tape to the "not recommended" bin. Aud: P. (K. Glaser)
