Against the backdrop of a 4th of July parade, eight-year-old Amy narrates this short, information-packed look at the history, meaning, nicknames, and usage of the American flag. Beginning with the "Join or Die" serpent banner used during the Revolutionary War, the evolution of Old Glory is traced from its origin through its current design, which last changed in 1960 when Hawaii became the 50th state. Rules for flag handling and display are outlined, explanations are provided for flag-draped coffins or flying the flag at half-mast, and the importance of patriotism, equality, and honoring the flag are discussed. Young viewers are taught that the flag, far from being just a piece of colorful cloth, represents the unity of the nation; thus it's especially notable that Americans of many different cultures and ethnicities are emphasized both visually and in the script. One of seven titles in the Primary Citizenship series, others include: We Vote, We Become Citizens, We Pledge Allegiance and America's Symbols. Recommended. Aud: E, I. (E. Gieschen)
