Answer: 500. Question: How many ants can a Tamandua catch in a single lick? You can wow Alex Trebek with that one. It's one of the interesting tidbits included in Art Lessons for Children, Vol. 5: Animals of the Rainforest, the latest in the long-running series (see VL-5/92, VL-2/93) hosted and taught by art instructor Donna Hugh. Here, children will learn about the toucan, the iguana, and the tamandua (a.k.a. anteater), as well as how to draw them using oil pastels, watercolors, and tempera paints. Like previous productions, the tape is not flashy, but offers solid art instruction for children. Art Lessons for Children, Vol. 6: Plants of the Rainforest is also available. Good for larger collections. Ages 8-12.Noted children's author, singer, and songwriter Barry Louis Polisar has a blast (and so will young viewers) exploring the world of art in the excellent ALA Video release Barry's Scrapbook: a Window Into Art aimed at 6-10 year olds, and priced for sell-through. The tape interweaves several elements: an educational tour of the Baltimore Museum of Art; visits with a collage artist, illustrator, and sculptor; and three do-it-themselves projects creating a collage, a mask, and an egg carton sculpture. Throughout, Polisar emphasizes the importance of finding out more about art at the local library, and he performs a handful of classics about dinosaurs, bees, and dogs to the delight of the children onscreen. With its emphasis on the wide diversity of art forms, its nifty projects, and its gentle reminder to use recycled materials, Barry's Scrapbook offers something for the head, the hands, and the heart.Art Lessons for Children, Vol. 5: Animals of the Rainforest is recommended for larger children's collections. Barry's Scrapbook: a Window Into Art is highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
