Would you rather have 49/98ths of a pizza, or 1/3rd? If you aren't sure, this video will help get you the bigger slice. The 4th lesson in the 30-tape Basic Math series (which assumes the viewer already has a knowledge of the basic operations, whole numbers, etc., taught in earlier volumes) begins by defining fractions, before explaining equivalent fractions, reducing and simplifying, and changing mixed numbers to improper fractions and back. Grounding each new idea in terms the viewer already understands, such as comparing a "numerator and denominator" to "digits and place value," keeps the frustration factor low. The host is energetic and articulate but can't seem to decide whether to look at the viewer (into the camera) or at some imaginary classroom (a bit distracting), and--just as on a math homework assignment--the program does not get full credit because it doesn't show all the work! When practice problems are demonstrated, none of the operations are shown, which could be a drawback, especially if the tape is being used for remedial purposes. Overall, however, it's recommended as a good supplementary teaching tool. Other titles in the Basic Math series include: Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division, Adding & Subtracting Decimals and Using the Calculator. Aud: I, J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
