Throughout human history, common clay has been processed into beautiful and useful objects through the potter's skill. Many people continue to enjoy this "earthy" and enjoyable craft. For those interested in learning it, Tara Productions' excellent Getting Started with Clay series, is highly recommended for public libraries. This particular entry in the series, Beginning to Glaze and Fire, discusses the finishing step for most pottery: ornamentation and glazing. Instructor Graham Sheehan discusses steps used in painting pieces which have been formed and dried to "leather hardness" stage. After ornamentation with slips or colored glaze, the pieces are bisque fired, glazed and fired once again. Pleasant and informative, this tape also includes useful glaze and slip recipes on the back of the box. Cheerfully recommended as an independent title or as part of the series, which includes: Getting Started with Clay (VL-3/97), Beginning Handbuilding (VL-3/97), Beginning Raku (VL-1/97) and Beginning to Throw on the Potter's Wheel (VL-3/96), available as a 5-volume set for $149.95. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
