Although my idea of enhancing my automobile is to drive it through a car wash, and spring the extra for wax, some people like to do a little more. Like strip it down to its shocks and then put it all back together. That's the idea behind Bill Colter's Guide to Classic Car Restoration. Colter, owner of the Preserve Auto Corporation in Stacy, MN, guides beginning and intermediate auto restorers through the subjects of making a plan, choosing the proper tools, disassembly (from removing the door handles to stripping the chassis), painting, metalwork ("good clean steel is the foundation of restoration work"), replacing interior roofs and upholstery, detailing, and more. Although the program claims to be step-by-step, it's not really, since a complete restoration is a massive project, and different cars present different problems. Still, as an introduction to the subject, this low-budget production has a lot of insider information, and would certainly be well worth the classic car hobbyist's while to watch. You Can Do Pinstriping, on the other hand, tackles a much smaller area of auto improvement--adding decorative pinstripe lines. After a brief introduction outlining the many different types of vehicles that one can use pinstriping on (from trucks to jet skis), this low-budget production lists the needed materials; shows viewers how to prepare the surface; and then demonstrates how to make straight, diagonal, and parallel lines and arcs (the tape recommends using an old refrigerator door for practice); how to clean brushes; and closes with a pinstriping demonstration on a 1934 Plymouth Coupe. Overall, the editing is poor: scenes last too long or appear as inserts into longer scenes for no apparent reason. But, worst of all, the program never shows viewers the wide range of pinstriping applications. We see some lines on a `fridge door and designs on one car. Not terribly inspiring.Bill Colter's Guide to Classic Car Restoration is an optional purchase--libraries with heavily used auto repair sections will want to consider, especially with the low price. You Can Do Pinstriping is not recommended. (R. Pitman)
