Bill Nye and his band of merry young scientists once more bring the riches of science to the formula-fearful in the classroom or at home. These two episodes from the popular PBS series find the intrepid scientist exploring the undersea world of Fish and Marine Mammals. We watched the Fish segment, which sported the characteristic humor, dazzling cinematic techniques, and rock-solid information entertainingly presented which has been the trademark of Nye's show (see VL-9/95). In Fish, children (and adults who like cool programs) will learn that fish have backbones and need oxygen just like humans, have scales which give an indication of a fish's age (just like rings on a tree), and are able to swim by doing what Jane Fonda does on a mat in an aerobics workout: contracting muscles. Adding to the info is a delightful rendition of "I'm a Sole Man" by Salmon Dave. Other new titles in the series are Mammals/Birds, Nutrition/Populations, Wetlands/Rivers & Streams, and Spinning Things/Earthquakes. The entire series of 60 programs is also available for $949 (which includes a considerable discount of nearly $550). Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: E, I, J, P. (R. Pitman)
