Providing teens with an upbeat and realistic explanation of breast self-examination (B.S.E.), this brief program provides important information on an always-timely women's health matter. Combining succinct narration, 3-D graphics, and an all-teen, multiethnic cast who demonstrate proper techniques, BSE for Teens stresses that although breast cancer isn't common in teenagers (and older women most often use mammography for checking breast health), it's important to know what feels normal so that any changes can be examined and caught early. Noting that B.S.E. should be done once a month, 7 to 10 days after a menstrual period, the program covers what to look for (breast size, shape, color, texture, etc.) with arms raised, lowered, and while laying down and checking the entire area spot by spot. While some teens may be embarrassed or worried by what they find, the program explains that a change doesn't necessarily mean it's time to panic (as most lumpiness is not cancerous), and that overall health is worth the 10 minutes a month necessary for a self-exam. Although featuring nudity, this introduction to B.S.E. is recommended for high schools, as well as academic and public libraries. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Williams-Wood)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
