Wisely focusing on the history of baseball cards rather than on the continuously changing price values of current cards, this information-packed guide to baseball card collecting takes viewers back to the late 1800s when tobacco companies inserted small cards containing drawings or photos of prominent actors, politicians, and sports figures. It wasn't too long before card producing companies concentrated solely on baseball players, based on their staying power in the public eye and the adulation that followed them. This was the start of a hobby that has grown into a multimillion-dollar business with plenty of competitors. The video looks at perhaps the greatest card collection in the country, and offers valuable collecting tips, including how to evaluate cards and how to store them for maximum protection. Host comedian Richard Lewis' angst-driven humor is an acquired taste, but is easily overlooked in light of the overall high quality of this production. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
