The first title, Build a Shaker Table with Kelly Mehler, recently picked up top honors at the American Video Conference in the "Craft" category, and deservedly so. In Taunton Press's first project video, master craftsman Mehler instructs viewers in the building of a shaker table (about a 30-hr. project for Mehler) -from selecting the wood to fixing minor defects in the finished product. Although Mehler is using some equipment not likely to be found around the average woodworker's home shop (heavy duty industrial size jointers and planers), smaller, hobbyist versions of most of these tools are available (pin and table routers, etc.) In addition to the actual detailed construction of the table, Mehler tells some interesting anecdotes about setting up shop and buying equipment. Close-up camera work and sound quality are top-notch, as Taunton's videos always are. In the second title, Installing Trim with Craig Savage, viewers learn some tips and techniques for doing easy trimwork that will enhance windows, doors, and walls. Instructor Savage begins by telling viewers that his first construction project was at the age of three, when he heard his grandmother on the other side of the wall (they lived in a duplex), and decided to pay her a visit-by hammering through the wall. Beginning with a demonstration on how to cut the three basic joints used in trimwork (the butt, miter, and cope), Savage goes on to instruct viewers in creating simple and attractive casings and aprons, as well as showing viewers how to fix the eyesore problem of a sagging door with attractive trim. Page numbers, which correlate to the companion book by Savage (Trim Carpentry Techniques) are shown onscreen but it is not required to complete the instruction shown in the video. Both titles are highly recommended. (See SAM MALOOF: A WOODWORKING PROFILE for availability.)
