If I had an ounce of talent in woodcarving, I would love to have Floyd Scholz—the low-key, affable host of this entertaining double-disc guide—as a mentor. Scholz, a much sought-after instructor of decorative bird carving whose seminars at the Vermont Raptor Academy are often sold out years in advance, here presents his techniques for carving and painting one of his favorite birds, the male American kestrel, one of the smallest falcons in the world. On the first disc, Scholz describes the kestrel in detail (with one perched on his hand) and later demonstrates the basics of carving, while on the second disc he covers the painting and finishing of the piece. Included in the package is a very informative diagram of the kestrel that prospective woodcarvers will find easy to follow. Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
