An outgrowth of Microsoft's recent CD-ROM conference, this tape provides a general, non-technical overview of the state-of-the-art in CD-ROM (Compact Disk-Read Only Memory). The basics of CD-ROM are covered and several live applications are featured. In addition, mock-ups of future CD-ROM products, including a multi-media encyclopedia are demonstrated. Explanations of how data base, video, and pictorial information will interact on the same medium are particularly noteworthy. These give an excellent idea of how CD-ROM may evolve within a few short years. Those libraries which have a need to explain the technology to the public or to staff will find this tape provides a reasonable introduction. However, the short length and high price-- together with the nagging feeling that this tape's primary purpose is as an ad for Microsoft--make one pause to consider. Regardless, it is recommended for appropriate collections. (Available from: Intermedia Productions, 1600 Dexter Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109). (Michael Schuyler )

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
