Ceramics artist Ro Mead is the instructress for this fine course in ceramics handbuilding. In Part 1, Mead gives a short introduction in which she outlines the tools necessary for clay work: clay, hands, and an idea. Although further refinements such as a slab roller are a boon to professional artists, the beginner need not have much more than clay to get started. The initial project is a simple pinch pot, followed by a more elaborate coil pot, and finishing up with a 3-sided vase. In Part 2, Mead tackles a few more demanding projects, such as a cylindrical vase, a drape-form bowl, and handmade decorated tiles using colored clay. Both the instruction and the camerawork are good, and the beginner is likely to gain a lot from these simple to complex projects which cover a wide variety of ways to work with clay. Highly recommended. (Available from: Crystal Productions, 1882 Johns Dr., P.O. Box 2159, Glenview, IL 60025.)
