National Geographic TV's Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan is featured in this three-volume compilation that finds the expert canine trainer providing tips to help humans create a good relationship with their pets. While the audience seminar setting feels a little infomercial-ish for Volume 1: People Training for Dogs, the content is solid, exploring dog psychology and the ways that dogs relate to humans, as well as the concept of breed vs. personality. “Animals are very simple,” Millan reminds the audience, adding that “we make it complicated for them.” Millan explains how dogs use their senses to relate to the world, pointing out that while humans are constantly aware of both past and future, canines tend to live in the moment. Pets need a leader of their “pack,” says Millan, but leaders must provide a structured approach to exercise, discipline, and affection (many dog-lovers handle only the last well, being suckers for slobbery kisses and wagging tails). Volume 2: Becoming a Pack Leader features Millan in action with three dogs and their owners, exploring issues in real-life home settings. Finally, Volume 3: Your New Dog—First Day and Beyond looks at the challenges and considerations involved in adopting pets from shelters, rescue groups, or breeders, as well as the importance of creating boundaries for a new puppy in the home. DVD extras include feeding tips, outtakes, and Millan's original promo video. An easygoing but effective behavioral guide for anyone hoping to improve their bond—and influence—with their four-legged friend, this is recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)
