Primarily aimed at helping new teen parents and caregivers understand what constitutes child abuse and neglect, how it affects the child, how to report it, and how to prevent it, Child Abuse & Neglect is a two-volume set with separate tapes for parents and caregivers. In the volume subtitled For Parents, viewers learn to identify emotional, physical and sexual abuse, as well as neglect, through scenarios that illustrate abusive behaviors to children and suggest how poverty, stress, and drug abuse contribute to the abuse. The program includes tips for choosing a caregiver, reporting abuse, getting social services help, and aiding in the recovery process. Volume two, subtitled For Caregivers, Daycare Providers and Other Professionals Who Work With Children, is more aimed at helping childcare professionals understand the causes of abuse, recognize signs, report cases, and assist children in healing. Employing simple language, and sensitively handling multicultural issues (such as how to talk to parents whose behavior might have been deemed acceptable in their former country, but is not legal in America), the title aimed at parents would make a fine supplement to a parenting class, while the one for caregivers would be suitable for an early childhood education course, or as a resource for social workers.
