When Peter Schwartz discovered that he had a dangerously high cholesterol level, his wife Cathleen, a registered nurse, set about making the necessary changes to ensure her husband's longevity. Since the Schwartz's were both hearty eaters and frequently had friends over for huge spreads, the prospect of a major lifestyle change was daunting, to say the least. Yet, as many people have discovered, healthy eating habits does not mean giving up good food. Excellent animated graphics are used to show viewers how cholesterol builds up in the arteries, and Doctor Robert Belknap discusses the differences between "good" cholesterol (HDL) and "bad" cholesterol (LDL). Advice on cleaning out the kitchen, understanding the arcane language of product labels, how to shop, a handful of good meals to make, and eating out in restaurants, rounds out the balance of the program. The emphasis here is on how one family armed itself with the necessary information, and then made the required changes. Cholesterol Control is both inspiring in its story of real people dealing with a real problem, and chockfull of practical tips for viewers to become more health-conscious "eaters." Highly recommended. (Available from: Schwartz & Ecker Productions, 6121 Hollis St., Emeryville, CA 94608.)
